Walk Leader: Vic 416-428-6631Mercer St., a short street in the King St. and Spadina Ave. area, is named for Andrew Mercer who worked as paymaster for the militia during the War of 1812. Mercer later operated a mortgage and loan business. When he died in 1871 without a will, the government used his fortune to build the Mercer Reformatory for “fallen women” on King St. which was demolished in 1969.
Andrew Mercer would be rolling over in his grave, if he knew what the Government ended up doing with his money. A difficult part of Toronto history, where hopefully lessons were learned. https://andrewmercerreformatory.org/heritage-plaque/
