Thanks to Dane for planning the walk.
Date: Saturday March 15th.
Meet: Meet at 10:00am at Don Mills and Overlea. [map]
(The #25 Don Mills north leaves every five minutes from Pape Station and will get people to O’Connor and Thorncliffe Park in about 10 minutes.)Starting at Don Mills and Overlea at 10am then heading west across the Overlea Bridge to Thorncliffe Park Drive where we head south to the newly renovated Thorncliffe Park Elementary School. Proceeding west again we meander west then south to end up up at RV Burgess Park which has seen a much documented community led revitalization (complete with a community bread oven) to end up at the entrance to the Thorncliffe Public Library on Thorncliffe Park Drive. Next we meander north to Overlea Boulevard again past four district styles of post-war tower blocks with a lot of interesting architectural detailing. From this intersection the group walks southwest along Leaside Avenue over the Leaside Bridge which has great views of downtown and the Don Valley to arrive at The Greek Grill at the intersection of Pape and O”Connor for lunch.
Thorncliffe Park has a great mix of Greek Orthodox churches, early modernist industrial and residential architecture (Coca Cola Building) and the GTA’s largest Muslim community with attendant mosques and food shops all juxtaposed at very high density.
Lunch: The Greek Grill (confirmed)
Head off west from the restaurant along O’Connor past the stunning Sisters of St. Joseph Retirement Facility to meander through the surrounding side streets towards The Playter Mansion. From here we go south across The Danforth towards Withrow Park and end at an undetermined pub along Queen Street East in Leslieville after going south along Carlaw Avenue.
